TRAVELLING TO ORKNEY

FERRY

 

NORTHLINK FERRIES run from Scrabster in Caithness to Stromness in Orkney, twice a day and 3 times a day in high season.  The journey takes 1 1/2 hours.  The ferry has a restaurant and bar.

Cabins can be booked for the night before early morning sailings from Scrabster to save an early start.

 

If time is limited taking the morning ferry to Orkney and returning on the evening ferry to Scrabster gives you @5 1/2 hours on Orkney.

 

Northlink also run a ferry from Aberdeen to Kirkwall 4 times a week northwards and 3 times a week southwards. It leaves Aberdeen late afternoon and arrives in Orkney @ 2300.  Cabins can be booked on this ferry which is good for the journey south which leaves Kirkwall at 2345.  this ferry also goes to Shetland and so can link in a holiday there.

PENTLAND FERRIES run from Gill's Bay in Caithness to St Margaret's Hope in Orkney 3 times a day, and 4 times a day in high season. The journey takes 1 hour.

JOHN O' GROAT'S FERRY is a passenger only ferry which runs from John O' Groats in Caithness to Burwick in Orkney from 1st June to 31st August.

This ferry links to a bus from Inverness and also links to a bus which does a day tour of Orkney.

BUS

 

Stagecoach run a bus from Inverness to the ferry terminal in Scrabster.  It leaves Inverness at 1430 and links with the 1900 Northlink sailing from Scrabster. Going south it links with the 0630 Northlink sailing from Stromness.

 

TRAIN

Scotrail run a train from Inverness to Thurso.  It is necessary to book a taxi from there to the ferry port of Scrabster which is about 5 miles away.  There is no taxi rank at the station and the station is not always manned.
