Orkney is a group of around 70 islands lying about 6 miles off the north coast of Scotland, of which about 20 are inhabited.  The main town is Kirkwall which is on the largest island called Mainland.

Northlink Ferries run to Stromness, which is the second largest town in Orkney from Scrabster on mainland Scotland.  Pentland Ferries run from Gill's Bay to St Margaret's Hope in South Ronaldsay.  In summer there is a passenger ferry from John O' Groats to Burwick in South Ronaldsay.

There are airlinks from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness and Shetland to Kirkwall.  In summer there is now a link between Kirkwall and Bergen in Norway.

Orkney Ferries links the North Isles and Hoy, Flotta and Rousay to Mainland Orkney, and there are also air links to some of the islands.
