Orkney is a group of around 70 islands lying about 6 miles off the north coast of Scotland, of which about 20 are inhabited.  The main town is Kirkwall which is on the largest island called Mainland.

Ferries run to Stromness, which is the second largest town in from Scrabster on mainland Scotland and to St Margaret's Hope in South Ronaldsay from Gill's Bay.  In summer there is a passenger ferry from John O' Groats to Burwick in South Ronaldsay.

There are airlinks from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness to Kirkwall.  In summer there is now a link between Kirkwall and Bergen in Norway.

The Orkney North Isles are linked to Mainland Orkney by ferries and some of them have air links from Kirkwall.
